You need to know about rainy season diseases that you need to look out this monsoon. While some are easily treatable a few can be life threatening. Most Common Monsoon Diseases mentioned below:



1: Malaria
In the list of top common monsoon ailments, malaria takes the number one spot. Female anopheles mosquito causes malaria; they usually breed in waterlogged areas. Thus, clean your water tank frequently to avoid the risk of malaria. The common symptoms of malaria are fever, shivers, muscle pain and weakness.
  • Prevention: Since this disease is spread by mosquitoes, so mosquito repellents and nets should be used to prevent it. Also make sure that water does not stagnate in your area as mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. Use DDT in the drains near your home. 

2: Diarrhoea
This is another common ailment during monsoon, which is caused due to unhygienic consumption or handling of foods and water. There are two main types of diarrhoea – acute diarrhoea and chronic diarrhoea. Both of these are highly preventable and treatable. In order to prevent this bowel problem, maintain proper hygiene, wash hands before handling food and drink only boiled water.
3: Dengue
Dengue fever is a monsoon ailments caused by mosquitoes. The common symptoms of dengue are fever, body aches, joint pain and rash. Tiger mosquito causes this monsoon ailment. To avoid being a victim of tiger mosquito, use insect repellent and cover yourself properly with clothes.
4: Chikungunya
Chikungunya is transmitted by the bite of infected aedes albopictus mosquitoes. These mosquitoes breed in stagnated water and bite during bright daylight. The common symptoms of chikungunya include an abrupt onset of fever, which is accompanied by joint pain. To prevent this monsoon ailment clean your water containers regularly and use insect repellent.
5: Typhoid
Typhoid is a water-borne disease, which is on high-rise during monsoon. S. Typhi bacteria cause typhoid, which is transmitted through consuming contaminated water or food. Poor sanitation also causes this disease to spread. The common symptoms of typhoid are fever, headache, weakness, pain and sore throat. To prevent the occurrence of this problem wash your hands regularly, avoid consuming street-side food or water and drink plenty of healthy fluid.
  • Prevention: This is a highly communicable disease so the patient should be isolated from the rest of the family. Getting a vaccination in advance also helps. The patients should get high intake of fluid to prevent dehydration. Since this disease has a tendency of relapsing in two weeks time, so the patient should take utmost care. Precautions should continue even after apparent recovery.


6: Viral fevers (Cholera)
However, viral fever occurs during all season, but they are most often during monsoon. The common symptoms of viral fever are mild to severe fever, which can last for 3 to 7 days, along with cold and cough.
Most Common Monsoon Disease # 7: Cholera
Cholera is a deadly monsoon disease. Cholera is usually caused by consuming contaminated food and water. It is also caused due to poor hygienic conditions. Severe diarrhoea with lose motions are the most common symptoms of cholera. One can prevent the occurrence of cholera by drinking clean water and maintain a proper hygiene.
  • Prevention: It is always wise to get vaccinated as it lasts secures you for almost six months. Keep the drinking water clean and boil it before using, if possible. Also maintain personal hygiene and good sanitation. In case one catches Cholera, oral rehydration should be given immediately. Also, though Choelra can be treated easily, it could prove dangerous if the treatment is not given on time. 

8: Leptospirosis
Leptospirosis is also known as Weil’s syndrome. It is caused by contact with dirty water or muck. The common symptoms of leptospirosis are headache, muscle pain, fever, shivers and inflammation. To prevent this monsoon ailment cover your feet completely, when venturing outdoors and treat all kinds of cuts and bruises properly.

9: Jaundice
Jaundice viruses are usually spread through contaminated water and food. The symptoms of jaundice are weakness, yellow urine, vomiting and liver dysfunction. Drink boiled water and avoid eating street food, to keep jaundice at bay this monsoon.

10: Stomach infection
The monsoon also brings in serious stomach infections like gastroenteritis, which can cause severe vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach pain. To prevent stomach problems, avoid eating roadside food, drink only boiled water and drink plenty of fluids.


11: Hepatitis A                          
This epidemic is generally caused by flies. It can also spread by coming in direct contact of the patient.
The symptoms of this disease are similar to flu i.e. high fever together with headache, pain in joints and vomiting. 
  • Prevention: The most important prevention of this disease is vaccination. This vaccine is available at all the government and private hospitals and should be taken by one and all as it is very deadly disease. The patient should be kept on complete bed rest and should be given a high calories diet, but fat and oily food should be avoided. 
12: Common cold
This is the most common disease that catches people cutting across age lines. You get wet and you’ve got it. Though it is difficult to forgo the temptation of dancing in the rain, this joy is likely to get you common cold. Constant sneezing, sore throat and fever are the common symptoms of this disease. 

  • Prevention: The easiest way is to avoid getting yourself drenched in rain. But if you don’t want to miss out on the fun then make sure that you dry yourself completely once you are done with dancing. Keep the air-conditioner at a normal temperature and avoid ice-creams. If you catch common cold then the best home made remedy is a glass of hot turmeric milk. Gargles with warm water give relief to your sore throat. If things don’t improve then it is always better to see a doctor. It is time to put your dancing shoes on and start enjoying the rain. Just make sure you don’t catch any disease.
