Flag Day is an American holiday celebrating and showing respect to our flag and the people who designed and created it. Our flag  represents our independence as Americans and our unity as a nation. The great history of our flag you can read about in Flags of America. It leads our soldiers in battle and many have died protecting it.  It even stands on the moon.

Fathers day
Fathers day is the day we celebrate our dads. It was invented by a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd who was raised by her father and thought that they should be celebrated just as much as mothers. Her dad was born in June so she chose to hold the first fathers day on June 19th of 1910. It was President Calvin Coolidge who decided to hold fathers day on the third Sunday of June 14 years later.

Juneteenth
Juneteenth is the oldest known holiday celebrating the end of slavery. It started on June 19th 1865 when the union soldiers, led by General Granger came to Galveston Texas and announced that the war was over and the slaves were free. General Granger read the Emancipation Proclamation freeing about 250,000 slaves throughout Texas. Some US States list it as an official holiday.

National Freedom Day
“As I would not be a slave, so I would not be a master. This expresses my idea of democracy.”- Abraham Lincoln  National Freedom Day commemorates the signing of the 13th Amendment outlawing slavery on February 1, 1865 by President Lincoln. The idea to celebrate the holiday came from Major Richard Robert Wright Sr., who was a former slave. He organized a group of leaders to write a bill for a national holiday that would celebrate freedom for all Americans, the holiday would take place on February 1. It was first commemorated on February 1, 1942, although it was not an official holiday yet. On June 30, 1948, President Harry Truman signed the bill. Every Year on this day, a wreath is laid at the Liberty Bell in celebration.
